The national airline carrier of Czech is Czech Airlines with connecting flights to most of the major European destinations and points of transit that lead to North America, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Every year the companies carries an excess of two million passengers. The “OK Plus Frequent Flyer Program” is a frequent flyer program run by the company. Czech Airlines is a member of the SkyTeam alliance. Czech Airlines History: - October 6, 1923 was the founding of CSA by the government of Czechoslovak. The first transport flight took place just three days later with a flight between Prague and Bratislava. The company continued to fly only domestic services until their first international flight in 1930 from Prague to Bratislava and Zagreb. When the Communist Party seized control of Czechoslovakia in January 1948 some of Czech Airlines flights to western Europe and the Middle East were suspended and much of the companies fleet was replaced with aircraft built by the Soviet Union. Czech Airlines became one of the first airlines in the world to have jet service in 1957.

On February 3, 1962 the company started their first transatlantic service to Havana. Czech Airlines code-shared with Cuban’s services that flew to Prague. As a result Cuba provided initial training and assistance to the crews operating the new Bristol Britannia jets.
In the late sixties Czech Airlines replaced their fleet of Britannia’s with IL-62 aircraft and then soon established new transatlantic routes to Montreal and New York in addition to Havana. Although Czech Airlines also continued to increase their European services which operated TU-134 and IL-18 aircraft. Then in the nineties Czech Airlines upgraded their fleet and got rid of all their Soviet built aircraft. They purchased and began using Western built aircraft such as the 737 and 767 by Boeing, the Airbus A320 and short range ATR aircraft for their European services. Since the start of the SkyTeam alliance Czech Airlines has been a full member. Other members of the alliance include Air France, KLM Airlines, Korean Air, Alitalia and Delta Air Lines. The present name of Czech Airlines was gained in May 1995 after the breakup of the Czechoslovak Federation. The Czech National Property Fund owns the majority of the airlines along with the Czech Consolidation Bank. As of 2005 the company had over four thousand employees. |
